  • How to use a DirectSmile Workstation

    Workstations in version 5 and 6

    Workstations can be used with any VDP Studio if the Workstation license is present. Worksations are tied to the VDP Studio.
    In the DirectSmile Generator directory you will find the DirectSmile Generator.exe, which is the used to start the actual VDP Studio and the DirectSmile Workstation.exe.


    What is the difference between the DirectSmile Generator and a Workstation?
    Only a Generator is able to render HighRes images and documents. A Workstation is not.

    What if I want to render HighRes images from a Workstation?
    You can't. But you can set up a Workstation so that it uses a Generators HighRes production capability.

    How would I do that?
    A Workstation needs to use the same working directory as a Generator.

    What is the working directory?
    This is a directory on a computer were the resources are stored that a Generator needs in order to produce HighRes images. This is usually the DirectSmile installation directory. In a default installation this is 'c:\program files(x86)\directsmile generator'

    How is this set up?
    To make a Generator working directory accessible for a Workstation, DirectSmile uses shared network drives. A network drive is a folder on a computer that is shared in a local network and handled like a physical disk drive or partition.
    On the computer where the Generator is installed, the Generators working directory needs to be shared first. In order to do so, go to the DirectSmile installation directory, right click on it, select 'properties > Sharing > Advanced sharing > share this folder > OK'
    In the security tab add the user "everyone" and give it the permission read, write and modify.
    Next open a windows explorer window (note: NOT Internet Explorer, but windows explorer) and in the address bar type in \\computername (name of the computer you are currently working on, to find out the name right click on computer or My Computer and select properties) you will see all shared folders. Right click on the shared working directory folder and select 'map network drive' select a drive letter and make sure the reconnect at logon checkbox is checked.
    Next, start up DirectSmile. In the DirectSmile menu click 'Settings > change working directory' select the network drive you just connected and click OK.
    Next close DirectSmile and start it up again, to confirm the change.

    The next steps need to be taken on the Workstation computer.
    Here you need to connect the working directory of the Generator as a network drive as well. In order to do so, open a windows explorer window (note: NOT Internet Explorer, but windows explorer) and in the address bar type in \\generator-computername (name of the computer where the Generator is running) you will see all shared folders.
    Right click on the shared Generator working directory folder and select 'map network drive' When selecting a drive letter, make absolutely sure to select the same drive letter as you selected on the Generator machine, also make sure that the reconnect at logon checkbox is checked.

    To change the working directory:
    1) double click the DirectSmile ProductionServer.exe Click image for larger version

    3) change the working directory and select the network drive you just connected and click OK
    4) close the ProductionServer
    5) To start your Workstation double click the DirectSmile Workstation.exe Click image for larger version

    That's it. So you don't need the dongles any longer and you can start the Workstation on as many computers as you like.
    Please be aware that only version 5 runs without the dongles and that you need a valid maintenance to use version 5. In order to use the Workstations you need the "Workstation" license.     Additional information to "How is this set up?" on the VDP Studio computer:

    If you click 'Settings > change working directory' but you don't see your mapped network drive, you need to map it with admin rights.
    Please do the following:

    1. close VDP Studio
    2. disconnect the mapped network drive
    3. go to Windows start menu and type cmd (don't click it or hit enter, yet)
    4. right mouse click on it and select "Run as administrator"
    5. type the following text and replace "X" with your network drive letter and "\\computername\foldername" with the VDP Studio folder's network path:

    net use X: \\computername\foldername

    You can find out the network path if you go to the VDP Studio installation directory, right click on the folder "DirectSmile Generator" and select 'properties > Sharing'. In case there are any blanks in the path, please use quotation marks for the path:

    net use X: "\\computername\folder name"

    After you succesfully mapepd the network drive, close cmd and start the VDP Studio. Now you can go to 'Settings > change working directory', select the network drive you just connected and click OK.The change will be applied after you restarted VDP Studio.

      Hi, do I not need to install DirectSmile on the workstation then?
      I'm getting errors when I try to run the executable from the working directory.

      The error when double clicking the productionserver.exe is:

      Run-time error '429'
      ActiveX component cannot create object.
